As we are all aware the war is ending and the majority of troops are coming home to their families. Long overdue! No matter what your beliefs are on this war these men and women suspended their lives to protect our freedom. For some the suspension was temporary for some it was permanent. Can Sayville show some love for these heros? Maybe parade, gathering at common grounds? Let's do something to show our appreciation.

Why so flippant? You make it sound like it's a put-off. Those people deserve as much gratitude and recognition they can get, not just some 'tie-in'.
Have a nice day.

Who hangs the signs across Main, for summerfest, and all that? The Chamber of Commerce?

Wouldn't it be nice if a collection ($1 per Sayville/W Sayville home) could be taken and the money used to decorate town?

If the Chamber takes up something like this or anyone else... I'd gladly print up the flyers necessary and help distribute them to each home for a collection.

Anyone up to doing something like this?

Sleepy,
You can put my company down as a Sponsor. You know my situation on availability right now so my time contributions are limitied but you guys have all of my support. Might want to consider making it an island wide tribute to the troops.

I sent an email to the general "contact us" email address at the sayville chamber of commerce. In that email I included a link to this thread. Hopefully the grass roots movement continues to grow.

Thank you, both of you.

I thought more people would have jumped on helping out by now.

If the Chamber is interested, or already has something in the works, and sees this thread, hope they add to it with their plans and/or specific contact info.

This forum is not the place to recruit people as I'm sure you know it's essentially the same handful of people who regularly post here (myself included).

I'd be happy to photo-journal any event held for these honorees on my own time.
Have a nice day.

Seen your pix, very nice.

Where should we recruit them? Not being sarcastic, don't run round town much, and thought a good job of rounding up the community was done via this means for L/J apartment problem.

Thank you.

I don't know. That's an area outside of my skill-set. There are some folks around who excel at community organization.

I spoke to someone who is involved with Chamber, She said to have a parade in Sayville we have to get a Permit from the Town of Islip, Because of closing of the road, Also said it takes about 2 months for them to review it and get back to you.

I know someone who's involved with Wounded Warrior Project, Maybe can get them to help with Veterans from War...

Wouldn't it be nice to show up at MacArthur airport on a day when a plane load of returning troops was landing? We could greet them and thank them. I saw a program on one of the PBS stations a while back where a group of retired vets did this. They carried their flags, and served coffee and tea to the soldiers coming into the terminal. It was so sweet.

Thanks Fox. Parade might be better, higher turn out, when the weather is a little warmer. I was thinking of something more lasting, such as decorating town.

Does anyone know, sorry I haven't kept up, when troops are returning? Are they returning in a large group of simply trickling in?

I'll call the Chamber tomorrow, see what they're up to and toss around a few ideas. Will also help out with parade if it's a go.

Will help out any way I can, I think Our Troops deserve nothing but the best!!

As long as I can remember back in the 60's, Watched some kind of War on T.V., Even then not understanding War, Always felt something special for someone's child dying to protect Our Country..

Will give my E-mail if anyone wants to contact me for my help!!

FOX,

I wasn't able to give the Chamber my undivided attention until today, but I called too late. Didn't realize they answer calls until 10:30am only. I'll get a hold of them Monday or Tuesday morning and report back. I too will give out my email if we can get something going. A parade would be nice also, btw. I didn't mean to put down your suggestion.

Thanks sayvilleres..

Fox,

The application for Parade (and Race) is on this Town page: http://townofislip-ny.gov/e-services/forms-a-publications/cat_view/26-town-clerk You don't have to go down to pick it up. It needs be submitted 45 days prior to the event.

I've put my thinking cap on. Lindsey's office and other local politicians should have info and names of returning troops. And we can certainly enlist the involvement of schools and other organizations. I'll get onto phone calls tomorrow morning. If you want to give me a call in the afternoon for an update on what I've discovered, feel free.

This is what I found out tonight, I spoke to someone involved with this town and Parade organizers, We the people just can't say we will have a Parade on Main, Not that simple!

She said the Firehouse has a Memorial Day Parade, We could then have The Troops come and March with them.

Bill Lindsey is a good start, Will check my EMail, Sleepy if you left me your number, Will call you tomorrow, With the names of some people I spoke to about this.

The Smith-Wever post and VFW are both in Sayville and at the parade each year with veterans marching. There is also a nice memorial at Sparrow Park after the parade. Maybe you could reach out to those organizations to see if they need help to recognize these vets.

I am loving this idea, Happy to be involved with this. Will contact a few people to try to get the info we need.

Having the parade already set up for Memorial Day in town and just adding more troops will be alot easier then starting a new one!
